A sturdy sled or sledge, typically drawn by horses or oxen, comprising two short sleds coupled together in tandem, designed for haulage in forestry and agriculture and subsequently used for other purposes, such as the transport of goods and passengers. Also: each of the short sleds coupled in this way. Cf. bobsleigh n. 1. Now chiefly historical.The bobsled was often used in forestry for drawing timber from the forest to a river or public road, the logs resting directly on its cross-members. It could be adapted for a variety of purposes by fitting a box, rack, or wagon body on top, and was an important winter farm vehicle in Canada and the northern United States until superseded by the tractor and other motor vehicles in the early 1950s.
