Etymology: < post-classical Latin splendiferus (from 12th cent. in British and continental sources; shortened < splendorifer (5th or 6th cent.) < classical Latin splendor splendour n. + -ifer -ifer comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare Middle French splendifere (1482). With later use in sense 2 compare splendacious adj.
