单词 spiggoty
释义

spiggotyn.adj.

Brit. /ˈspɪɡəti/, U.S. /ˈspɪɡədi/
Forms: 1800s–1900s spickety, 1900s spiggety, 1900s spiggity, 1900s spigotti, 1900s spikity, 1900s– spiggoty, 1900s– spigoty.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: speak v.; spic n., -ety suffix.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps representing a (stereotyped) pronunciation in imperfect English of a phrase with speak v. (in e.g. speak the—: see note), or perhaps an extended form of spic n. (although this is first attested slightly later): see -ety suffix.Compare the following early suggestions:1900 N.Y. Times 20 May 12/2 It may have come from the native ambition to speak English and to inform all comers of that desire... When ‘speak English’ encounters a Porto Ricon, the result may be not unlike ‘spiggely’, which some Anglo-Saxon mind roughened into ‘spiggoty’.1908 Sat. Evening Post 14 Mar. 3 The Panamanians presented themselves..with the statement..‘Spik d'English.’..[or] ‘No spik d'English.’..and those early Americans soon classed the whole race of men who could or could not ‘Spik d'Eng.’ as ‘Spikities’, and from that grew the harmonious and descriptive Spigotty. Some forms may reflect folk-etymological association with spigot n.
U.S. slang (chiefly derogatory and offensive). Now rare.
