Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French bon gré.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French, French bon gré (adverb) graciously (1280 or earlier), willingly (1477; compare en bon gré willingly: early 13th cent. or earlier), also as preposition (apparently only in Anglo-Norman bon gré ou malgré with or without the consent of: c1292 or earlier) < bon good (see boon adj.) + gré gree n.2 Compare maugre prep. and maugre adv.With quot. c1400 compare maugre prep. 2 (especially maugre a person's cheeks at that sense). In quot. 1848 apparently re-formed after malgré prep. (within English, using French elements).
