Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: actino- comb. form, -pterygian comb. form.
Etymology: < actino- comb. form + -pterygian comb. form, after scientific Latin Actinopterygii (see note). Compare earlier acanthopterygian adj., crossopterygian adj. and n.The scientific Latin name Actinopteri was introduced by E. D. Cope in 1871 ( Trans. Amer. Philos. Soc. 14 449). This was later altered to Actinopterygii (attributed to E. F. Klein c1885) or Actinopterygia (as used by Cope from 1887). O.E.D. Suppl. (1972) gives the pronunciation as (æ:ktinoˌtĕri·dʒiăn) /ˌæktɪnəʊtəˈrɪdʒɪən/.

Of or relating to the group Actinopterygii of bony fishes characterized by membranous fins supported by slender rays or spines.The group includes all extant bony fishes with the exception of coelacanths and lungfishes (sarcopterygians or lobe-finned fishes). It is now most often ranked as a class.
