Etymology: < post-classical Latin adespota anonymous writings (1710 or earlier; also occurring frequently as an unassimilated Latin word in German philological writings of the 19th cent.), use as noun (short for scripta adespota ) of neuter plural of adespotus (also adespotos) anonymous (5th cent.; 1584 in a British source), without owner (a1540) < ancient Greek ἀδέσποτος without master or owner, in Hellenistic Greek also anonymous < ἀ- a- prefix6 + δεσπότης despot n.
With plural agreement.
1. In classical scholarship: works of literature, esp. in Greek, not attributed to a particular author. In early use, frequently as a title of collections of anonymous Greek poetry.
