Etymology: Aphetically < Old French despense (modern French dépense ), = Spanish despensa , Portuguese despensa , Italian dispensa , medieval Latin despensa , dispensa (rarely spensa ), in the same sense: compare dispense n.¹ So Swiss dialect spense. The prefix de- is similarly dropped in other words; in this case there may have been association with spense n.
