Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: actino- comb. form, mycetes n.2
Etymology: < actino- comb. form + mycetes n.2, after Actinomyces n., of which it was originally treated as a plural form.
Biology.
With plural agreement. Rod-shaped or filamentous Gram-positive bacteria belonging to a diverse group having a tendency to form branching colonies resembling the mycelium of a fungus, including many soil-dwelling and some pathogenic genera.Although no longer classified as fungi, actinomycetes (also called ray fungi) are still sometimes grouped with them in non-specialist contexts. They include the pathogens of tuberculosis, diphtheria, and nocardiosis, and the sources of many antibiotics (the streptomycetes).
