Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish son montuno.
Etymology: < Cuban Spanish son montuno (1937 or earlier) < son son n.2 + montuno wild, rustic (see montuno n.). Compare slightly earlier son jarocho n. and slightly later montuno n. 2.
Cuban son music (see son n.2 2), esp. a form featuring an extended passage of musical call and response over a flowing rhythm produced by a combination of percussion instruments; the dance associated with this; a song or dance in this style.
