Etymology: < soft adj. + -nomics comb. form, after Japanese sofutonomikkusu (1983; see note), so called either with reference to software or with reference to the ‘soft’ industries (such as the service industry), which do not produce tangible objects.The first element of the Japanese model is ambiguous; it could be either sofuto soft (1913; < English soft adj.; also as first element in borrowed compounds) or sofuto , short for sofuto-uea (1973; < English software n.), and it is likely that both had an influence.
