Origin: A borrowing from Portuguese. Etymon: Portuguese sarapatel.

Etymology: < Portuguese sarapatel (1773 or earlier; used in southern Portugal, Brazil, and India), of unknown origin. Perhaps compare sara- , found in several words and perhaps implying mixing or confusion (compare e.g. sarabando saraband n.¹). Compare Portuguese regional (northern) sarrabulho, denoting the same dish (1720).

A dish of Portuguese origin adopted in some former Portuguese colonies (esp. in northeastern Brazil, in Goa, and on the island of Zanzibar), consisting of different kinds of meat, offal, and often blood, cooked together in a stew with vinegar and spices.
