Etymology: < classical Latin framea kind of light, versatile spear used by Germanic peoples, in post-classical Latin also sword (Vulgate), apparently of Germanic origin (compare the mention of the word as a loan in Tacitus's Germania; compare quot. 1598), probably < an ablaut variant of the Germanic base of thrum n.² (compare the nouns cited at that entry, many of which denote weapons or parts of weapons), with sound substitution of /f/ for /θ/, a phoneme lacking in Latin.
