单词 framea
释义

framean.

Brit. /ˈfreɪmɪə/, U.S. /ˈfreɪmiə/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin framea.
Etymology: < classical Latin framea kind of light, versatile spear used by Germanic peoples, in post-classical Latin also sword (Vulgate), apparently of Germanic origin (compare the mention of the word as a loan in Tacitus's Germania; compare quot. 1598), probably < an ablaut variant of the Germanic base of thrum n.2 (compare the nouns cited at that entry, many of which denote weapons or parts of weapons), with sound substitution of /f/ for /θ/, a phoneme lacking in Latin. See discussion in G. Must ‘The Origin of Framea’ in Language 34 (1958) 364–6. Compare Middle French, French framée (1559).
historical.
A light, versatile spear with an iron head used by the ancient Germanic peoples.
