Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps compare sparkle v.2 4b, or perhaps German spachtel putty knife, mastic, filler (16th cent.; originally a variant of Spatel spatula < Italian spatola spatula n.).

A proprietary name for: a compound used to fill cracks in plaster and produce a smooth surface before decoration.
