Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the first syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. sonoro-mucous Brit. /ˌsɒnərə(ʊ)ˈmjuːkəs/, U.S. /ˌsɑnəroʊˈmjukəs/.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: sonorous adj., -o- connective.
Etymology: < sonor- (in sonorous adj. + -o- connective.Apparently not productive after the early 20th cent.
Medicine.
Forming adjectives describing sounds heard in auscultation of the chest, with the sense ‘sonorous and ——’, as sonoro-mucous, sonoro-sibilant. Cf. sonorous adj. 2b.
