Etymology: Partly (in α. forms) < Italian sonettiere (1598 in Florio, or earlier; < sonetto sonnet n. + -iere -ier suffix), and partly (in β. forms) < sonnet n. + -eer suffix1.
A writer or composer of sonnets. Frequently in disparaging sense: a minor or mediocre poet. Also in extended use.
