1972 Amer. Mineralogist 57 1571 Smythite was originally described by Erd et al...as having a rhombohedral structure..and Fe₃S₄ composition. These data are in error and smythite is hereby redefined... Nickel is present in all smythites present to date..and it is suggested that smythite is not a phase in the Fe-S system but possibly in the Fe–Ni–S system.

1976 Minerals Sci. & Engin. VIII. 119/2 There is still considerable doubt about the composition range and thermal stability of natural and synthetic smythite, and even whether it should be included as a phase in the iron-sulphur system.
