Amer. Chem. Soc. LXXVIII. 2017/1 We have found minute, plate-like crystal inclusions in calcite crystals..to be a new iron sulfide... The mineral is named smythite (pronounced smīth'ite) in honor of Professor C. H. Smyth, Jr. 1972 Amer. Mineralogist 57 1571 Smythite was originally described by Erd et al...as having a rhombohedral structure..and Fe3S4 composition. These data are in error and smythite is hereby redefined... Nickel is present in all smythites present to date..and it is suggested that smythite is not a phase in the Fe-S system but possibly in the Fe–Ni–S system. 1976 Minerals Sci. & Engin. VIII. 119/2 There is still considerable doubt about the composition range and thermal stability of natural and synthetic smythite, and even whether it should be included as a phase in the iron-sulphur system.
