Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: slut n., slut adj., -ness suffix.
Etymology: In early use either (i) < slut adj. + -ness suffix, or (ii) < slut n. (compare sense branch II. at that entry) + -ness suffix. In later use apparently re-formed < slut n. (compare sense branch I. at that entry) + -ness suffix. Compare earlier sluttiness n., sluttishness n.
