Origin: A borrowing from Sranan. Etymon: Sranan Djutongo.

Etymology: < Sranan Djutongo ( < dju ( < Jew n.) + tongo language: see Ningre Tongo n.), with remodelling of the first element after Jew n.This creole language arose in the late 17th cent. as a result of relexification (with a Portuguese input) of Sranan. In 1665 Jewish settlers arrived in Suriname from Cayenne (French Guyana) and brought with them slaves who spoke a Portuguese-based Creole.

Now disused.

A creole language spoken among Maroons (maroon n.²) in Suriname, having a structure largely derived from West African languages and a vocabulary largely derived from English; = Saramaccan n. b.
