Forms: Also Middle English slombrous, 1700s–1800s slumb'rous.
Etymology: < slumber n. + -ous suffix. The older form is slumbrous (compare wondrous), but that with the e is the one given by Johnson (1755) and has been the commoner spelling during the 19th cent.
