Originally: a law made by the British monarch with the advice of Parliament (now historical). In later use: a statute passed by a parliament.In Britain an Act of Parliament must be passed, in the form of a bill, by the House of Commons and (usually) the House of Lords before being ratified by royal assent.

Act of Parliament clock n. British a large 18th-cent. wall clock typically having gold numerals on an uncovered black or green dial and usually displayed in an inn, tavern, or similar establishment.The name arose from the popular belief that such clocks were acquired by innkeepers in order to attract custom after Parliament passed an act in 1797 imposing a tax on clocks and watches (see quot. 1917).
