Etymology: < scientific Latin Sittella, former genus name (Swainson 1837: see note) < Sitta , genus name of the nuthatch (see sittine n. and adj.) + -ella -ella suffix.Swainson used the Latin name Sittella as a section or subgenus name for the Australasian birds ( W. Swainson in H. Murray Encycl. Geogr. (1834) 1484; (in form Sitella) W. Swainson Treat. Geogr. & Classif. Animals (1835) 121) and then as a genus name ( W. Swainson Nat. Hist. & Classif. Birds II. (1837) 317); however, the name was invalid, having previously been proposed by Rafinesque (1815) for the nuthatches. Compare French sittelle nuthatch (Guéneau de Montbeillard 1778).
