Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: skylark n., -er suffix1; skylark v., -er suffix1.
Etymology: Originally < skylark n. + -er suffix1; in later use partly also < skylark v. + -er suffix1.In use in sense 1 with reference to the lark's early song; the thief finds his targets by going around homes very early on mornings after heavy storms, offering to repair damage.
1. slang. A bricklayer who gathers information about a house on the pretext of offering repairs, in anticipation of committing a robbery. Obsolete. rare.See note in etymology.
