单词 sisi
释义

sisin.

Brit. /ˈsɪsi/, U.S. /ˈsɪsi/
Inflections: Plural sisis, unchanged.
Forms:

α. 1800s jiggee.

β. 1800s– sisi.

Origin: A borrowing from Tongan. Etymon: Tongan sisi.
Etymology: < Tongan sisi skirt worn chiefly for dancing. The Tongan word is unrelated to palm of the genus Cordyline (cognate with Maori ti n.2). The difference between α. and β. forms reflects a phonological change in Tongan, where alveolar affricates changed to sibilants towards the end of the 19th cent.
A skirt made of leaves or plant fibre, or decorative girdle made of flowers and leaves, worn in Tonga and other South Pacific islands, esp. on formal or ceremonial occasions.
