Etymology: < scientific Latin Acephala, plural noun (1801 or earlier), use as noun of post-classical Latin acephalus (see acephalous adj.), after French acéphales , plural noun ( G. Cuvier Tableau élémentaire de l'histoire naturelle des animaux (1797) vi. i. 378); compare scientific Latin -a -a suffix². Compare later acephal n. 3, acephalan n.The occasional plural form acephalae in quot. 1823 apparently results from misapprehension of the Latin plural noun as a singular noun of the first declension, and formation of the corresponding Latin plural. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (ăse·fălă) /əˈsɛfələ/.
