Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin sinistration- , sinistratio ; Latin sinistr- , sinister , -ation suffix.
Etymology: Partly (i) < post-classical Latin sinistration-, sinistratio action of moving or turning to the left (15th cent. or earlier) < sinistrat- , past participial stem of sinistrare to go on the left hand (from late 12th cent. in British sources), to oppose, prevent (14th cent. in British sources), (of fortune) to be adverse (early 15th cent. in British sources; also in continental sources; < classical Latin sinistr- , stem of sinister sinister adj.) + classical Latin -iō -ion suffix1, and partly (ii) < classical Latin sinistr-, sinister sinister adj. + -ation suffix.
