Etymology: < Sanskrit Siṅhala Sri Lanka (Ceylon) + -ese suffix. Compare Cingalese adj. and n.The plural Singales used by Purchas (1613) and Herbert (1634) does not appear to be of this formation: it may represent the Sanskrit plural Sinhalās.
1. As plural, the native inhabitants of Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon). Also singular, a Sinhalese native of Sri Lanka. The Sinhalese are properly members of an Aryan people deriving from Northern India and now forming the majority of the population of Sri Lanka.
