Etymology: < Old Norse Skræling(j)ar plural, the Norse name for the inhabitants of Greenland at the time of the Norse settlement.
Scandinavian History.
A member of a people encountered by early Norse settlers on Greenland, of uncertain origin but often considered to be of Inuit descent. Also: an inhabitant of Vinland (sometimes identified with the north-eastern coast of North America). Usually plural.
