单词 black forest
释义

Black Forestn.

Brit. /ˌblak ˈfɒrᵻst/ U.S. /ˌblæk ˈfɔrəst/
Forms: also with lower-case initials.
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Black Forest.
Etymology: < Black Forest, the name of a mountainous wooded region in Baden-Württemberg in southwest Germany ( < black adj. + forest n., after German Schwarzwald (8th cent. in Old High German as Svarzwald; compare post-classical Latin nigra silva (8th cent.)). The region is so called on account of the dark colour of its coniferous forests. In sense 2 after German Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (1934 or earlier). Although it has sometimes been suggested that an early form of the cake may have been made in the Black Forest, no supporting evidence exists for this claim. Rather, the cake is apparently so called on account of its containing kirsch, a cherry brandy (see kirsch n.), which is itself closely associated with the Black Forest; according to German regulations, the taste of the kirsch must be noticeable in the finished cake. A widespread account of the origin of the cake dates its creation to 1915 and attributes it to the baker Josef Keller who worked in a fashionable Bonn café; however, there is no secure evidence to support this claim.
