Etymology: < German Pregnan (A. Butenandt 1930, in Berichte der Deutsch. Chem. Ges. 63 660) < Pregnan- (in Pregnandiol pregnanediol n.), with ending probably reanalysed as -an -ane suffix².

Chemistry.

A tetracyclic saturated hydrocarbon, C₂₁H₃₆, which has two stereoisomeric forms and whose molecule is the framework of those of a group of steroids, including progesterone and pregnanediol; spec. the 5β-isomer. Also: any substituted compound having this molecular framework.
