Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: sidero- comb. form1, -mancy comb. form.
Etymology: < sidero- comb. form1 + -mancy comb. form, after French sidéromancie (1690 or earlier) or post-classical Latin sideromantia (1615 or earlier). Compare modern Greek σιδηρομαντεία (1702 or earlier).
Divination by the examination of straws burning on a hot iron surface.

1895 F. T. Elworthy Evil Eye xii. 445 Sideromancy.., conjuring with a hot iron, on which they laid an odd number of straws. The result required was obtained by observing the contortions made by the straws in burning.
