A method of engraving formerly used especially for bank notes, in which multiple engraved printing plates could be made all bearing the same image.The design to be printed is first engraved on a soft steel block. This is hardened and then used to produce copies of the image in relief on a soft steel roller, by rocking the roller back and forth over the block. The roller is then hardened, and used to produce duplicate recessed images on further printing plates.
