Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish shtik.
Etymology: < Yiddish shtik, in the same senses, specific sense developments of shtik part, piece < German Stück or its Middle High German antecedent stück (see stock n.1). With the use in sense 1 compare German Stück play, drama (18th cent.), specific sense development of Stück part, piece.In β. forms after the Yiddish plural forms shtiklakh, shtiklekh (the form of the plural morpheme reflects dialectal differences in Yiddish).
