A type of lease or system of tenure in which the tenant agrees to rent a property for a fixed short term and the landlord retains the right to recover the property at the end of the term (also as protected shorthold). Frequently attributive, as shorthold lease, shorthold tenancy, etc.

1976 Housing (Shorthold Tenancies) Bill. Explanatory Memorandum. The object of the Bill is to create a new standard form of tenure of dwellings which will allow the owners of vacant property and people seeking rented accommodation to enter into simple but secure arrangements for short tenancies of fixed term. The Bill suggests that this new form of tenure should be known as ‘shorthold’. A shorthold lease may cover any period between a minimum of one year and a maximum of three years.
