(a) (probably) a club or cudgel regarded as the typical weapon of a workshop apprentice (obsolete rare); (b) a club or society providing support or benefits to workers at a factory or other place of employment.Quot. a1641 illustrating sense (a) appears to be an isolated use, but for the association of apprentices and clubs in Elizabethan and Jacobean London, cf. prentices and clubs at club n. 1c.
