Etymons: Hebrew šāḇūʿōṯ, šāḇūaʿ; Yiddish shvues. Etymology: < Hebrew šāḇūʿōṯ (Numbers 28:26; more fully ḥag šāḇūʿōṯ (Exodus 34:22, Deuteronomy 16:16, etc.)), plural of šāḇūaʿ week, period of seven days, ultimately < šeḇaʿ seven. The festival is so called because it is observed seven weeks after the end of Passover. Compare earlier Feast (also Festival, Solemnity, etc.) of Weeks n. at week n. Phrases 4a, and also Pentecost n. 1.In β. forms via Yiddish shvues, reflecting an Ashkenazic pronunciation of the Hebrew plural noun.
