Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Partly also a borrowing from Yiddish. Etymons: Hebrew šāḇūʿōṯ, šāḇūaʿ; Yiddish shvues.
Etymology: < Hebrew šāḇūʿōṯ (Numbers 28:26; more fully ḥag šāḇūʿōṯ (Exodus 34:22, Deuteronomy 16:16, etc.)), plural of šāḇūaʿ week, period of seven days, ultimately < šeḇaʿ seven. The festival is so called because it is observed seven weeks after the end of Passover. Compare earlier Feast (also Festival, Solemnity, etc.) of Weeks n. at week n. Phrases 4a, and also Pentecost n. 1.In β. forms via Yiddish shvues, reflecting an Ashkenazic pronunciation of the Hebrew plural noun.
Judaism.
The festival observed on the sixth (and in the diaspora also the seventh) day of the month of Sivan, falling on the fiftieth day after the second day of Passover, each intervening day being formally enumerated as part of the counting of the Omer (see omer n. 2).Shavuot is specified in Deuteronomy 16:16 as one of three pilgrim festivals, the others being Passover n. 1 and Sukkot n. Explicitly a harvest festival in the Old Testament (see Exodus 34:22), the festival became established as a celebration of the giving of the Torah, based on the Talmudic deduction (derived from the narrative of Exodus 19) that the revelation of Moses on Mount Sinai took place on this date.Shavuot is also referred to as the Feast of Weeks (see Feast (also Festival, Solemnity, etc.) of Weeks n. at week n. Phrases 4a), and as Pentecost (Pentecost n. 1).
