Etymology: < Persian shāhī royal, < shāh : see shah n.It has been suggested that the β forms are due to confusion (by Europeans) with the word shāhid martyr.
Now Historical.
Originally: a small silver coin of Persia varying between 4d. and 10d.; (subsequently) a copper coin of Persia worth about 5/ 8d.
