Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin sexternus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin sexternus (frequently from 13th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin sex six (see sex- comb. form) + -ternus (in quaternus quatern n.; compare quaternion n.). Compare Middle French sexterne (a1390 in an apparently isolated attestation), Middle High German sextern (German †Sextern ). Compare post-classical Latin sexternio (16th cent.). Compare quatern n.
A quire consisting of six sheets of parchment or paper folded in two, so as to give twelve leaves.
