Etymology: < classical Latin mīles glōriōsus, the title of a comedy by Plautus (c254–184 b.c.) < mīles soldier (see military adj.) + glōriōsus boastful, conceited (see glorious adj.).The title of Plautus' play, written c205 b.c., translates ancient Greek Ἀλαζών ‘Braggart’, the title of a comedy by Menander (c342–292 b.c.). O.E.D. Suppl. (1976) gives the pronunciation as (mī·lēiz or məi·līz glōəriōu·sɒ̆s) /ˈmiːleɪz/ or /ˈmaɪliːz ɡlɔərɪˈəʊsəs/.
A boastful soldier, as a stock literary character, esp. in Roman and Renaissance theatrical comedies.
