Etymology: < self- prefix + abandon n.2 Compare earlier self-abandoning n., self-abandonment n., and also earlier self-abandoned adj., self-abandoning adj.In quot. 1837 the spelling of the English word is apparently influenced by that of the glossed Italian phrase.
Surrender of oneself to natural impulses; lack of inhibition or restraint; = abandon n.2 2. Also: abandonment of one's own needs, desires, etc. Cf. self-abandonment n.
