Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish shames.
Etymology: < Yiddish shames attendant < post-biblical Hebrew šammāš attendant, servant, caretaker, (specifically) sexton of a synagogue, beadle of a Beth Din, (in later use also) an extra candle used for lighting Hanukkah candles < šimmēš to serve.In quot. 1650 translating Italian sciamas (1637 in the passage translated; < Yiddish). Forms with final s reflect the Yiddish word; forms with final sh reflect remodelling after the ulterior Hebrew etymon. In plural form shamashim after the Hebrew plural form (the Yiddish plural form is shamosim).
