Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: self- prefix, starter n.
Etymology: < self- prefix + starter n., after self-starting adj.
1. A device or small motor used to start an internal combustion engine, esp. in a motor vehicle, without having to crank it; a button for activating this. Also figurative.starter and starter button are now the more commonly used terms.
