Compare French seconde enfance (1560 or earlier with reference to old age (compare sense 2), 1631 or earlier in sense 1), deuxième enfance (1812 or earlier in sense 1).Hippocrates ( de Septimanis 5) uses ancient Greek παῖς ‘child’ to denote the second stage of childhood.
