Forms: 1700s 2000s– scriddan, 1800s scridan, 1800s scridden.
Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Scottish Gaelic. Etymon: Scottish Gaelic sgrìodan.
Etymology: Apparently < Scottish Gaelic sgrìodan stony ravine, track of a mountain torrent, scree (although this is first attested slightly later: 1812 or earlier), apparently < an early Scandinavian base (compare Old Icelandic skriða : see scree n.) + an unidentified suffix, perhaps Early Irish -than place of (in later use probably identified with the Scottish Gaelic diminutive suffix -an).
Scottish. Now rare.
A torrent of water, carrying a large quantity of rocks and stones, which pours down a mountainside or hillside following rain; the stones or rocks deposited by such a torrent.
