Etymology: < sea n. + lion n.With sense 1 compare lion of the sea at lion n. 8, post-classical Latin leo marinus (1531 or earlier), and Middle French lyon marin (1562 in Du Pinet's translation of Pliny), French lion de mer (1611 in Cotgrave in this sense, in which the word has been obsolete since the early 17th cent.). With sense 3a compare French lion de mer (1611 in Cotgrave in this sense) and German Seelöwe (18th cent.). In sense 3b after German Seelöwe (16 July 1940 in this sense, in a directive by Hitler). Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈsea-lion.
