A person who draws or writes on paving stones; esp. one who creates pictures on paving stones, typically using coloured chalks, in order to earn money from passers-by; (later more generally) a pavement artist.In quot. 1841 with reference to a beggar writing appeals for money on paving stones; cf. sense 2.
