Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: screen n.1, printing n.
Etymology: < screen n.1 + printing n., after screen print n. 2. Compare slightly earlier screen-printed adj. and screen printer n., and later screen-print v.
A process for producing a print in which ink is passed across a screen of fine mesh having a (now often photographically or digitally reproduced) stencil superimposed upon it, the ink being forced through the mesh in the areas not blocked by the stencil to reproduce a picture or design on the surface below. Cf. serigraphy n., screen process n. 2.The picture or design to be printed is sometimes created by painting a masking agent such as glue or varnish directly onto the screen, rather than using a stencil.
