Etymology: < post-classical Latin Scottice, Scotice (adverb) in Irish (from 9th cent. in British sources), in Scottish Gaelic (from 1205 in British sources), in Scots (1587 or earlier in Scottish sources, rare) < Scotticus , Scoticus Scotic adj. + classical Latin -ē , suffix forming adverbs. Compare earlier Scotic adj.Compare also the following, apparently isolated example of the word in an English context with reference to Scottish Gaelic (in the edition of a 14th cent. Latin text):1872 W. F. Skene in John of Fordun Chronica Gentis Scotorum II. 413 These notices [sc. L. quae Scotice Abthen vocatur, etc.] are sufficient to show that the word ‘Abthain’ was the equivalent Scottice of ‘Abbatia’.
