Forms: Formerly skol-, scolezite.
Etymology: < Greek σκωληκ-, σκώληξ scolex n. + -ite suffix1. The name in sense 1 was given because the mineral sometimes curls up when heated. The original form scolezite is < German scolezit (1813, see A. H. Chester Dict. Names Minerals 1896).
1. Mineralogy. Hydrous silicate of aluminium and calcium, found in needle-shaped crystals and fibrous or radiated masses.
