Etymology: < post-classical Latin scholasticatus (u -stem) period spent by a Jesuit in training for the priesthood (1789 or earlier), house of studies for members in the third grade of the Society of Jesus (1858 or earlier) < classical Latin scholasticus scholastic adj. + -ātus -ate suffix¹.With sense 2 compare German Scholasticat (1829 or earlier; now usually Scholastikat), French scholasticat (1851 or earlier).
