Etymology: < post-classical Latin scholaster schoolmaster (12th cent. in a British source; also in continental sources), alteration (after classical Latin magister magister n.) of classical Latin scholasticus (see scholastic adj.).Compare Old French scolaistre, escolastre (13th cent.; French écolâtre, †scholastre).

In medieval and early modern Europe: a member of the clergy who was the head of an ecclesiastical school attached to a cathedral, monastery, or collegiate church, and who (sometimes) also oversaw all schools in the city or diocese. The scholaster was usually a member of the chapter of a cathedral or collegiate church (cf. chapter n. 5), and received a stipend from the church revenues.
